Abstract | Introduction: Bats have been reported as hosts of the Trypanosoma cruzi protozoan, the etiologic agent of American trypanosomiasis, an endemic zoonotic disease in México. Objective: To describe T. cruzi infection in bats from the states of Campeche and Yucatán, México. Materials and methods: Captures were made from March to November, 2017 at three sites in Yucatán and one in Campeche. Up to four mist nets on two consecutive nights were used for the capture. The bats' species were identified and euthanasia was performed to collect kidney and heart samples for total DNA extraction. Trypanosoma cruzi infection was detected by conventional PCR with the amplification of a fragment belonging to the T. cruzi DNA nuclear. Results: Eighty-six bats belonging to five families (Vespertilionidae, Noctilionidae, Mormoopidae, Phyllostomidae, and Molossidae) and 13 species (Rhogeessa aeneus, Noctilio leporinus, Pteronotus davyi, P. parnellii, Artibeus jamaicensis, A. lituratus, A. phaeotis, Glossophaga soricina, Carollia sowelli, Chiroderma villosum, Uroderma bilobatum, Sturnira parvidens, and Molossus rufus) were captured. Infection frequency by PCR was 30,2% (26/86) detected only in the renal tissue. The infected species were P. parnellii, G. soricina, A. lituratus, A. jamaicensis, S. parvidens, C. villosum, and R. aeneus. Conclusions: Our results confirmed the participation of several bat species as hosts in the T. cruzi transmission cycle in the region. Further studies are necessary to establish the importance of these animals in the zoonotic transmission of T. cruzi.


Resumen | Introducción. Los murciélagos se han reportado como huéspedes del protozoario Trypanosoma cruzi, agente etiológico de la tripanosomiasis americana, enfermedad zoonótica endémica en México. Objetivo. Describir la infección con T. cruzi en murciélagos capturados en los estados de Campeche y Yucatán, México. Materiales y métodos. Se realizaron capturas de marzo a noviembre de 2017 en tres sitios de Yucatán y uno de Campeche. Para la captura se emplearon hasta cuatro redes de niebla por dos noches consecutivas. Se identificó la especie de los murciélagos capturados y se les practicó la eutanasia para recolectar muestras de riñón y corazón, utilizadas posteriormente en la extracción de ADN total. La infección con T. cruzi se detectó por la amplificación con PCR convencional de un fragmento perteneciente al ADN nuclear de T. cruzi. Resultados. Se capturaron 86 murciélagos pertenecientes a cinco familias (Vespertilionidae, Noctilionidae, Mormoopidae, Phyllostomidae, Molossidae) y 13 especies (Rhogeessa aeneus, Noctilio leporinus, Pteronotus davyi, P. parnellii, Artibeus jamaicensis, A. lituratus, A. phaeotis, Glossophaga soricina, Carollia sowelli, Chiroderma villosum, Uroderma bilobatum, Sturnira parvidens y Molossus rufus). La PCR mostró una frecuencia de infección de 30,2 % (26/86), detectada únicamente en tejido renal. Las especies infectadas fueron P. parnellii, G. soricina, A. lituratus, A. jamaicensis, S. parvidens, C. villosum y R. aeneus. Conclusiones. Los resultados confirmaron la participación de varias especies de murciélagos como huéspedes en el ciclo de transmisión de T. cruzi en la región. Es necesario realizar más estudios para determinar la importancia de estos animales en la transmisión zoonótica de T. cruzi.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Group or colony size is an important variable that is related to biological, ecological, and conservation aspects of bats. However, estimating the size of each colony or group in roosts used by more than one species is particularly difficult, especially when recapture rates are very low (< 10 %). Objective: Estimate the colony size of 14 species of bats: one emballonurid, one natalid, four mormoopids, seven phyllostomids, and one vespertilionid, which roosted throughout one year (July 2016 to June 2017) in a mine and two caves -Cerro Huatulco and El Apanguito- in the Sierra Sur and Costa of the state of Oaxaca. Methods: We constructed capture-recapture histories per species and roost, and for species for which we obtained recaptures that represented at least 10 % of the captures, we used the probabilistic Cormack-Jolly-Seber model. In the case of species with no recaptures or with a recapture proportion lower than 10 %, we estimated the number of individuals per roost by applying the same proportion between the number of captured specimens and the estimated number for species with recaptures greater than 10 % and that they belonged to the same family or trophic guild. Results: The total estimated number of bats in the three studied roosts was 20 105. The highest colony size estimates were for the mormoopids Pteronotus fulvus and P. mesoamericanus from El Apanguito and P. fulvus from Cerro Huatulco, with 6 609, 4 092 and 2 212 individuals, respectively. Conclusions: The methodology used in this study allowed estimating the colony size for all registered species, even though only for 21.42 % the recapture rates were greater than 10 %. Therefore, we consider that this methodology represents a viable alternative to estimate colony size in other roosts. This information, together with the high species richness and importance for reproductive processes, allow us to propose these sites as Bat Protection and Conservation Areas in Mexico.


Introducción: El tamaño del grupo o colonia es una variable importante que está relacionada con los aspectos biológicos, ecológicos y de conservación de los murciélagos. Sin embargo, estimar el tamaño de cada colonia o grupo en refugios utilizados por más de una especie es particularmente difícil, especialmente cuando las tasas de recaptura son muy bajas (< 10 %). Objetivo: Estimar el tamaño de la colonia de 14 especies de murciélagos: un emballonúrido, un natálido, cuatro mormópidos, siete filostómidos y un vespertiliónido, que se refugiaron durante un año (Julio 2016 a Junio 2017) en una mina y dos cuevas -Cerro Huatulco y El Apanguito- en la Sierra Sur y Costa del estado de Oaxaca. Métodos: Construimos historias de captura-recaptura por especie y refugio, y para las especies que se obtuvieron recapturas que representaban al menos el 10 % de las capturas, utilizamos un modelo probabilístico de Cormack-Jolly-Seber para estimar el tamaño de sus colonias. En el caso de especies sin recapturas o con una proporción de recaptura inferior al 10 %, estimamos el número de individuos por refugio aplicando la misma proporción entre el número de individuos capturados y el número total estimado para las especies con recapturas mayores del 10 % y que pertenecieran a la misma familia o gremio trófico registradas con la mayor similitud ecológica y con suficientes recapturas para aplicar el modelo Cormack-Jolly-Seber. Resultados: El número total estimado de murciélagos en los tres refugios de estudio fue de 20 105. Las estimaciones de tamaño de colonia más altos fueron para los mormópidos Pteronotus fulvus y P. mesoamericanus de El Apanguito y P. fulvus en Cerro Huatulco, con 6 609, 4 092 and 2 212 individuos, respectivamente. Conclusiones: La metodología utilizada en este estudio permitió estimar el tamaño de la colonia para todas las especies registradas, a pesar de que solo para el 21.42 % las tasas de recaptura fueron superiores al 10 %. Por lo tanto, consideramos que esta metodología representa una alternativa viable para estimar el tamaño de colonia en otros refugios. Esta información, junto con los procesos de alta riqueza de especies y reproducción que tienen lugar en esta área, permiten proponer estos sitios como áreas de protección y conservación de murciélagos en México.

ABSTRACT

Toxoplasma gondii es un protozoario parásito reconocido como el agente causal de la toxoplasmosis, enfermedad zoonótica que afecta a humanos y animales domésticos o silvestres. En México, representa un problema de salud pública y veterinaria, sobre todo en regiones con climas tropicales y subtropicales. Los murciélagos han sido identificados como hospederos accidentales en el ciclo de transmisión; no obstante, en México no existe información previa; por lo tanto, el objetivo del presente estudio es reportar la infección con T. gondii en murciélagos capturados en sitios de los estados de Campeche y Yucatán, México. Se capturaron murciélagos en dos sitios de Yucatán y uno de Campeche, ubicados en la Península de Yucatán. Se recolectaron riñones, bazo e hígado y se emplearon en la extracción de ADN total. La infección con T. gondii se detectó a través de la amplificación de un fragmento del gen B1, utilizando PCR anidada. Los productos positivos fueron purificados y enviados a secuenciación para su posterior análisis de alineamiento; adicionalmente, se construyó un árbol filogenético. Se analizaron un total de 69 murciélagos pertenecientes a ocho especies distintas: 41 (59.4 %, 41/69) Artibeus jamaicensis; seis (8.7 %, 6/69) Pteronotus parnellii; seis (8.7 %, 6/69) Noctilio leporinus; seis (8.7 %, 6/69) Chiroderma villosum; cuatro (5.8 %, 4/69) Glossophaga soricina; dos (2.9 %, 2/69) Carollia sowelli; dos (2.89 %, 2/69) Artibeus lituratus y dos (2.9%, 2/69) Rhogeessa aeneus. La PCR anidada identificó ocho (11.6 %, 8/69) murciélagos positivos a la infección: seis (75 %, 6/8) A. jamaicensis, capturados en X'matkuil y Panabá, un (12.5 %, 1/8) G. soricina y un (12.5 %, 1/8) C. villosum, ambos capturados en Panabá. El análisis de alineamiento arrojó 99-100 % para cobertura y 97-99 % para identidad respecto a secuencias de T. gondii. Nuestros resultados aportan al entendimiento del ciclo de transmisión de T. gondii en la región; sin embargo, son necesarias investigaciones futuras para determinar los genotipos circulantes, ya que estudios anteriores han demostrado que estos animales pueden estar infectados con genotipos identificados en otros animales domésticos o silvestres e incluso en humanos.


Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite recognized as the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, a zoonotic disease that affects humans and domestic or wild animals. In Mexico, it represents a public and animal health problem, especially in regions with tropical and subtropical climates. Bats have been reported as accidental hosts in the transmission cycle; however, there is no preceding information in Mexico. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to report the T. gondii infection in bats captured in sites of Campeche and Yucatan states, Mexico. Bats were captured in two sites in Yucatan (X'matkuil and Panaba) and one in Campeche (Hampolol), located in the Yucatan Peninsula. Kidneys, spleen, and liver were collected and used in the total DNA extraction. Toxoplasma gondii infection was detected through the amplification of a B1 gene fragment, using nested PCR. The positive PCR products were purified and sent to sequencing for a posterior sequence identity analysis. Additionally, a phylogenetic tree was made. A total of 69 bats belonging to eight different species were processed: 41 (59.4 %, 41/69) Artibeus jamaicensis; six (8.7 %, 6/69) Pteronotus parnellii; six (8.7 %, 6/69) Noctilio leporinus; six (8.7 %, 6/69) Chiroderma villosum; four (5.8 %, 4/69) Glossophaga soricina; two (2.9 %, 2/69) Carollia sowelli; two (2.89 %, 2/69) Artibeus lituratus; and two (2.9 %, 2/69) Rhogeessa aeneus. The nested PCR identified eight (11.6 %, 8/69) infected bats: six (75 %, 6/8) A. jamaicensis, captured in X'matkuil and Panaba, one (12.5 %, 1/8) G. soricina, and one (12.5 %, 1/8) C. villosum, both captured in Panaba. The alignment analysis yielded 99-100 % for cover and 97-99 % for identity to T. gondii sequences. Our results contribute to the understanding of the T. gondii transmission cycle in the region; however, future research is needed to determine circulating genotypes, as previous studies have demonstrated that these animals might be infected with identified genotypes in other domestic or wild animals and even in humans.

ABSTRACT

A raiva é uma zoonose viral, que acomete o Sistema Nervoso Central, de evolução aguda e quase sempre fatal. Através das notificações enviadas à SES-MT (Secretaria de Estado de Saúde de Mato Grosso), foi realizado um mapeamento dos casos positivos de raiva nas diferentes espécies, que ocorreram no período de 2002 a 2011 no Estado de Mato Grosso. Foram diagnosticados 915 casos de raiva no estado durante esse período. Animais de diferentes espécies foram acometidos pela enfermidade. A espécie bovina foi notadamente a mais notificada com 80,00% (736) dos casos, seguida pela canina com 12,56% (115), a equina 5,57% (51), a quiróptera 0,65% (6), felina, suína, ovina e muar com 0,21%, (2, 2, 2, 3) casos, e as espécies caprina e primata com 0,1% (1) cada uma. No entanto, houve uma redução significativa no número de casos caninos no decorrer dos anos, com ausência de notificações a partir do ano de 2008. Nesse sentido, foi possível observar que diferentes espécies foram acometidas, evidenciando a circulação viral no Estado de Mato Grosso.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The state of Rio Grande do Norte is considered a data gap for bat species records in Brazil. The state is also currently target of large economic projects with potential impacts on bats, especially wind farms and mining enterprises. In addition, Rio Grande do Norte has few conservation units in which there is no systematic study on bat fauna. The Nísia Floresta National Forest (NFNF), a federally protected area of 174 hectares, is located in the eastern coast of Rio Grande do Norte and corresponds to one of the last remnants of Atlantic Forest in the state, in its northernmost limits. A bat inventory was conducted in NFNF using mist nets set at ground level, from sunset to sunrise, from December 2011 to December 2012, totaling 25 sampling nights. We captured 1,379 bats belonging to four families and 16 species. Artibeus planirostris (Phyllostomidae) was the most frequently captured species (n = 685; 50%), followed by Myotis lavali (Vespertilionidae) (n = 248; 18%) and Phyllostomus discolor (Phyllostomidae) (n = 147; 11%). Peropteryx leucoptera, Phyllostomus discolor, Phyllostomus hastatus, Lophostoma brasiliense, Lasiurus blossevillii, Myotis lavali, and Promops nasutus are new records for Rio Grande do Norte, increasing the current number of bat species from 25 to 32 in this state. Further inventories, especially using acoustic surveys with bat detectors, might add more species to the NFNF bat list.


Resumo O estado do Rio Grande do Norte é considerado uma lacuna de informações sobre ocorrência de morcegos no Brasil. O estado também é atualmente alvo de grandes empreendimentos com potencial impacto sobre a quiropterofauna, especialmente no setor de energia eólica e mineração. Além disso, apresenta poucas unidades de conservação, e estas não possuem sua quiropterofauna estudada de maneira sistematizada. A Floresta Nacional de Nísia Floresta (FNNF), uma unidade de conservação federal de 174 hectares, localiza-se na costa leste do Rio Grande do Norte e corresponde a um dos últimos remanescentes de Mata Atlântica no estado e no limite norte do bioma. Foi realizado um inventário de morcegos na FNNF com a utilização de redes de neblina armadas no nível do solo, do por do sol ao amanhecer, de dezembro de 2011 a dezembro de 2012, totalizando 25 noites de amostragem. Nós capturamos 1379 morcegos pertencentes a quatro famílias e 16 espécies. Artibeus planirostris (Phyllostomidae) foi a espécie mais frequentemente capturada (n = 685; 50%), seguida por Myotis lavali (Vespertilionidae) (n = 248; 18%) e Phyllostomus discolor (Phyllostomidae) (n = 147; 11%). Peropteryx leucoptera, Phyllostomus discolor, Phyllostomus hastatus, Lophostoma brasiliense, Lasiurus blossevillii, Myotis lavali e Promops nasutus são novos registros para o Rio Grande do Norte, aumentando o número atual de espécies de morcegos no estado de 25 para 32. Inventários adicionais, especialmente utilizando amostragens acústicas com detectores de morcegos, tendem a acrescentar novas espécies à lista de morcegos da FNNF.

El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la presencia de virus rábico en poblaciones de D. rotundus mediante la técnica de la inmunofluorescencia directa. Por medio de un estudio epidemiológico descriptivo de corte transversal y de un muestreo por conveniencia, se seleccionaron fincas en Ciénaga de Oro y hagún (Córdoba), donde se observó la presencia de murciélagos hematófagos por la visualización de mordeduras en bovinos y equinos, y se implementó la captura de D. rotundus mediante el atrapamiento con redes de niebla. En las 33 salidas, se capturaron 250 D. rotundus. Se tomaron 100 especímenes a los cuales se les practicó la eutanasia con el fin de detectar el virus de la rabia; los demás especímenes fueron tratados con un anticoagulante tópico y liberados con el fin de controlar la población de D. rotundus. Las capturas de los murciélagos hematófagos y las técnicas de diagnóstico se implementaron con el acompañamiento de funcionarios de la Oficina de Epidemiología del ICA (Córdoba), dentro del programa de control de la rabia bovina. Sólo el 13% de D. rotundus procedentes de diferentes zonas rurales de Sahagún fueron positivos por la inmunofluorescencia directa y ninguna muestra fue positiva por la prueba biológica. Se debe continuar realizando vigilancia epidemiológica y control poblaciones de D. rotundus e implementar programas de vacunación masiva en animales de compañía y de interés zootécnico; así como también de educación a la población para la concientización de riesgos y de los beneficios ecológicos de la fauna silvestre; siendo estas las mejores herramientas para prevenir la transmisión.


The objective of this study was to determine the presence of Rabies virus in D. rotundus populations through the direct immunofluorescence technique. Using a descriptive cross-sectional epidemiological study and of a convenience sampling. Farms in Ciénaga de Oro and Sahagún (Córdoba) were selected where the presence of bloodsucker bats was detected because of bites in cattle and horses, and the capture of D. rotundus was implemented using trapping with mist nets. A total of 250 D. rotundus were caught in the 33 journeys, and 100 specimens were taken which underwent euthanasia to detect the rabies virus. The rest of the samples were treated with a topic anticoagulant and set free to control D. rotundus population. The capture of bloodsucking bats and the diagnosis techniques were carried out with the support of public servants from the epidemiology office of ICA (Colombian acronym for Colombian Institute of Agriculture) - Cordoba as part of the bovine rabies control program. Only 13% of the D. rotundus coming from different rural areas of Sahagún were positive for direct immunofluorescence, and no sample was positive for the biological test. Epidemiological watch and D. rotundus populations control must continue as well as the implementation of massive vaccination programs for escort animals and those of zootechnical concern and of educational programs to the community to raise awareness of risks and the ecological benefits of wildlife as the best tools to prevent transmission.

OBJETIVO:Determinar la distribución geoespacial de los casos de rabia paralítica bovina transmitida por Desmodus rotundus en los estados de Guanajuato, Querétaro y San Luis Potosí, México. MÉTODOS: Estudio epidemiológico transversal a partir de los casos notificados por las campañas estatales de control de la rabia paralítica bovina en Guanajuato (2008-2013), Querétaro (2005-2013) y San Luis Potosí (2001-2013). Se confirmaron los casos por inmunofluorescencia directa. Se elaboraron mapas de distribución de los casos por año y por especie, mediante el software ArcMap versión 10.1. Para identificar áreas con condiciones apropiadas para la presencia de casos se combinaron las variables bioclimáticas con los casos georreferenciados, mediante el programa MaxEnt versión 3.3.3. RESULTADOS: Se registraron 1 037 casos, de los cuales, 911 (87,9%) ocurrieron en San Luis Potosí, 82 (7,9%) en Querétaro y 44 (4,2%) en Guanajuato. Del total, 87,4% ocurrió en alturas menores de 1 500 msnm. En Guanajuato y Querétaro, 77,3% y 42,3% de los casos, respectivamente, ocurrieron en alturas mayores de 1 500 msnm. Los meses de mayor incidencia fueron de diciembre a marzo. La variante antigénica viral V11 fue la más frecuente (173 casos), presente en los tres estados estudiados. En el canal endémico, el promedio de casos se mantiene en la zona de seguridad de enero a marzo, pero de abril a junio excede la mediana. La distribución espacial de los casos muestra la diseminación reciente de la enfermedad, lo que coincide con la presencia del murciélago vampiro. CONCLUSIONES: La rabia paralítica bovina se ha extendido a regiones anteriormente libres de esta enfermedad. Las características ambientales y la altura sobre el nivel del mar no limitan la presentación de casos. Se debe mantener un monitoreo constante para la detección oportuna de casos. La vacunación se debe realizar antes del comienzo de las lluvias, sin esperar la aparición de brotes.


OBJECTIVE: To determine the geospatial distribution of bovine paralytic rabies cases transmitted by Desmodus rotundus in the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional epidemiological study based on cases reported during statewide campaigns for the control of bovine paralytic rabies in Guanajuato (2008-2013), Querétaro (2005-2013) and San Luis Potosí (2001-2013). All cases were confirmed by direct immunofluorescence. Maps showing the distribution of cases by year and species were constructed using ArcMap version 10.1. To identify areas where conditions favor the appearance of cases, bioclimatic variables were combined with georeferenced cases using MaxEnt version 3.3.3. RESULTS: Of the 1037 cases recorded, 911 (87.9%) occurred in San Luis Potosí, 82 (7.9%) in Querétaro, and 44 (4.2%) in Guanajuato. Of the total number of cases, 87.4% occurred at altitudes of less than 1500 meters above sea level. In Guanajuato and Querétaro, 77.3% and 42.3% of the cases, respectively, occurred at altitudes greater than 1 500 meters above sea level. Peak incidence was recorded from December to March. The V11 antigenic variant of the virus was the most common (173 cases); it was found in all three states. In the endemic channel, the average number of cases remains within the security zone from January to March but exceeds the median value from April to June. The spatial distribution of cases shows that the disease has spread recently, which correlates with the presence of the vampire bat. CONCLUSIONS: Bovine paralytic rabies has spread to areas that were formerly free of the disease. Environmental characteristics and the altitude above sea level do not limit the appearance of cases. Constant monitoring should be conducted for early case detection. Vaccination should take place before the rainy season starts, without waiting for outbreaks to occur.

ABSTRACT

Given the substantial lacunas in the understanding of the occurrence and distribution of bat species in the eastern portion of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso (Araguaia basin), this study presents an inventory of the species known to occur in the region, highlighting the areas sampled adequately and the species known to occur in conservation units. Georeferenced records of the occurrence of bat species in the region were obtained from published studies, scientific collections, through either the SpeciesLink network or directly from the curator, as well as the capture of specimens by our research group between 2008 and 2013. A 0.5° x 0.5° (latitude/longitude) grid was added to the map of the region for the quantification of the bat species richness of each grid cell. A total of 63 chiropteran species were recorded for the study area. Only 10 of the 30 grid cells had records of bats, and just three contained more than 20 species, and were considered to be sampled adequately on a minimal level. Bat species have been recorded in three conservation units, two state and one municipal. The number of species recorded represents 82.7% of the total of chiropterans known to occur in Mato Grosso, although 12 species were recorded in the state for the first time, reinforcing the paucity of data available on the distribution of bats in the region. The high bat species richness recorded in the present study reinforces the importance of eastern Mato Grosso, a transition zone between the Amazon forest and the Cerrado savanna of central Brazil, for the conservation of Neotropical chiropterans.


Frente è lacuna existente sobre a real ocorrência e distribuição das espécies de morcegos objetivamos listar as espécies registradas na região leste do estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil, apontando os locais minimamente amostrados e as espécies catalogadas dentro das Unidades de Conservação. Foram consideradas espécies com registros georrefenciados para a região disponibilizados por periódicos científicos, coleções científicas, por meio do sistema SpeciesLink ou disponibilizados diretamente pela curadoria, além de capturas realizadas entre 2008 e 2013 pelo nosso grupo de pesquisa. Ao mapa da região leste do estado foi incorporado células de 0,5° latitudinais X 0,5° longitudinais e quantificadas sobre a riqueza de espécies de morcegos em cada célula. Foram registradas 63 espécies para a região. Das 30 células geradas 10 tiveram pelo menos uma espécie registrada e três tiveram mais de 20 espécies sendo consideradas minimamente amostradas. Três Unidades de Conservação tiveram espécies catalogadas, sendo duas estaduais e uma municipal. A região leste teve o registro de 82,7% do total de espécies conhecidas para o estado de Mato Grosso, sendo que 12 ainda não haviam sido assinaladas para o estado demonstrando que ainda pouco se conhece sobre a real distribuição dos morcegos na região. Considerando a alta riqueza encontrada enfatizamos a importância da região leste de Mato Grosso, zona de transição entre Cerrado e Amazônia, e também o potencial do estado na conservação dos morcegos neotropicais.

ABSTRACT

Specific bacterial diversity in bats of different food guilds in Southern sierra Oaxaca, Mexico. Bats have different ecologic roles in variable ecosystems that have been already described. They have been linked to several zoonoses, however little is known about the relationship between bat microbiota and their diet, and studies on the bacterial ecology of the microbiota in bats are limited. To contribute with the description of this important interaction between microbiota and host, the aim of this work was to characterize the composi- tion and bacterial diversity in the oral and anal regions of 10 species of bats, in relation to food guild. For this, monthly samplings were conducted using four mist nets (19:00-24:00h) from February to October 2012; nets were reviewed every 45 minutes. Each captured organism was sampled in the oral and anal cavities with sterile swabs; these were placed in pre-enrichment media and stored at 4°C. Bacterial samples were studied which through selective media, chromogenic and biochemical tests. We obtained samples from 502 frugivorous, 29 hematophagous and 11 nectivorous bats. We found a total of 26 bacterial species, with the predominant phylum Proteobacteria and the family Enterobacteriaceae. Statistically significant differences were observed between oral and anal microhabitats: frugivorous (t=-3.516, g.l=14.761, p=0.003), hematophagous (t=-3.320, g.l=19.262, p=0.003), and nectivorous (t=-2.497, g.l=11.933, p=0.026), and in some guilds [frugivorous and nectivorous in the anal region (t=2.274, g.l=29.660, p=0.030), hematophagous and nectivorous anal region (t=2.077, g.l=29.904, p=0.049)]. It was also shown that there is bacteria specificity in some guilds such as nectivorous and frugivorous with Bacillus cereus, B. sp. X. sp., as well as, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, Aeromonas hydrophyla in hematophagous. Bacterial presence can be explained by the type of diet and/or by transfer of bacteria from their preys. These bacteria may be indigenous to these bats and play the role of mutual benefit, providing the host with stable growth conditions and supplemental nutrients, while the microbiota contributes to host nutrition, development of the immune system, stabilization of the microbial population and to avoid pathogens colonization. By understanding the importance of the relation- ship between host and its bacterial populations, the conservation efforts being made to protect species such as bats may be improved.


Los estudios sobre ecología bacteriana de la micro- biota en los murciélagos son limitados, dicha información es importante para determinar la importancia de esta interacción entre microbiota y hospedero, por tal motivo el objetivo de este trabajo es caracterizar la composición y diversidad bacteriana en las regiones orales y anales de 10 especies de quirópteros con relación al gremio alimenticio a través de medios selectivos, cromogénicos y pruebas bio- químicas. Se muestrearon 502 murciélagos frugívoros, 29 hematófagos y 11 nectívoros, fueron encontradas un total de 26 especies bacterianas, siendo predominantes el filo proteobacterias y la familia Enterobacteriaceae. Se observaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas entre el microhabitat oral y anal [frugívoros (t=-3.516, g.l=14.761, p=0.003), hematófagos (t=-3.320, g.l=19.262, p=0.003), y nectívoros (t=-2.497, g.l=11.933, p=0.026), así como en algunos gremios (frugívoros e nectívoros en la región anal (t=2.274, g.l=29.660, p=0.030), hematófago y nectívoros en la región anal (t=2.077, g.l=29.904, p=0.049)]. También se mostró que existe especificidad de bacterias en algunos gremios como: Bacillus cereus, B. spp. X. spp. en nectívoros y frugívoros, así como, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, Aeromonas hydrophyla en hematófagos que podría deberse al tipo de dieta que llevan o por transferencia de bacterias al contacto con sus presas. Los murciélagos han sido relacionados con varias zoonosis, sin embargo poco se conoce sobre la relación que existe entre el murciélago, su micro- biota y la dieta que llevan. Estas bacterias pudieran ser autóctonas de los murciélagos y jugar un papel de mutuo beneficio, proveyéndole al hospedero condiciones estables de crecimiento y nutrientes complementarios, mientras que la microbiota contribuye en la nutrición del hospedero, desarrollo del sistema inmune, estabilizando la población microbiana y prohibiendo la colonización de patógenos. Entender la importancia de la relación entre el hospedero y su población bacteriana puede ayudar a mejorar los esfuerzos de conservación que se vienen realizando para proteger especies como los murciélagos.

We studied infestation rates and parasite-host associations between streblid flies and phyllostomid bats in an Atlantic Forest area of Rio de Janeiro state, southeastern Brazil. We captured 301 individuals from seven Phyllostomidae bat species. Out of that total, 69 bats had been parasitised by nine Streblidae species; the most frequent species were Trichobius joblingi and Trichobius tiptoni. The species Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with Anoura geoffroyi, was the most frequent species. The highest mean intensity was observed for Paraeuctenodes longipes, associated with A. geoffroyi, and Paratrichobius longicrus associated with Artibeus lituratus, both ectoparasite species with a mean intensity of five individuals per bat. Trichobius joblingi exhibited the highest mean abundance, which was over three on its host species. Streblid richness in the study area was similar to the richness found in other studies carried out in the Atlantic Forest. We observed that streblid richness in this biome depends more on inherent characteristics of each physiognomy and on the host-species than on the sampling effort.


Estudou-se as taxas de infestação e as associações parasita-hospedeiros de dípteros estreblídeos ectoparasitas de morcegos filostomídeos, em um fragmento de Mata Atlântica, no estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram capturados 301 indivíduos de sete espécies de morcegos da família Phyllostomidae. Desse total, 69 morcegos encontravam-se parasitados com nove espécies de Streblidae, sendo Trichobius joblingi e Trichobius tiptoni as espécies mais freqüentes do total de estreblídeos coletados. Paraeuctenodes longipes, associada à Anoura geoffroyi foi a espécie mais prevalente. A maior intensidade média foi encontrada para Paraeuctenodes longipes, associada à A. geoffroyi e Paratrichobius longicrus associada à Artibeus lituratus, ambos com cinco ectoparasitas em média por morcego infestado. Trichobius joblingi apresentou a maior abundância média de infestação, que foi superior a três nas espécies de hospedeiros em que foi encontrada. A riqueza de estreblídeos da área de estudo é similar àquela obtida em outros estudos realizados na Mata Atlântica, e verificou-se que a riqueza de estreblídeos nesse bioma depende mais de outras características inerentes a cada fitofisionomia e à espécie hospedeira do que do esforço amostral de coleta.

ABSTRACT

The purpose was to show that displacements, promoters of genetic diversity in metapopulations, increase the probability of survival of bat species adapted to medium and long-distance flights. Samples were taken in four forest fragments, distributed in three municipalities in northern Paraná, and the maximum distance between the studied areas is 20 km. A monthly sampling was performed for each fragment, for the period of July 2008 to June 2009. We used eight nets for collection which remained open during the first four hours of the night, totalling 192 hours during a year of study. The marking occurred from October 2008 to March 2009 and was accomplished through the use of anodised metal rings of four different colours. One hundred and fifty individuals were banded and since the first capture, four displacements were recorded. After five months of collecting and marking, one Carollia perspicillata was found three km away. Two Artibeus lituratus were recorded about 20 km from the marking place: the first one after 22 months and the second one after 24 months. Additionally, one Platyrrhinus lineatus was captured at about 20 km, after 26 months. As they moved around over considerable distances and are not monogamous, they mate with females of other fragments, exchanging genes and reducing or even avoiding inbreeding. Thus, populations of bats have the ability to increase genetic diversity in metapopulations, provided by displacements between the forest fragments. Species that behave like this are not vulnerable to isolation.


Objetivou-se mostrar que os deslocamentos, promotores da diversidade genética em metapopulações, incrementam a probabilidade de sobrevivência das populações de espécies de morcegos adaptadas para voos de média e longa distância. As amostragens foram realizadas em quatro fragmentos florestais, distribuídos em três municípios da região norte do Paraná, sendo que a distância máxima entre as áreas de estudo foi de 20 km. Uma amostragem mensal foi realizada em cada fragmento, durante o período de julho de 2008 a junho de 2009. Foram utilizadas oito redes por coleta, que permaneceram abertas durante as quatro primeiras horas da noite, totalizando 192 horas, durante um ano de estudo. A marcação ocorreu de outubro de 2008 a março de 2009 e foi realizada por meio de anilhas metálicas anodizadas de quatro cores diferentes. Cento e cinquenta indivíduos foram marcados e, desde a captura, foram registrados quatro deslocamentos. Após cinco meses da coleta e da marcação, um Carollia perspicillata foi encontrado a três quilômetros. Dois Artibeus lituratus foram registrados a cerca de 20 km do local de marcação, um destes após 22 meses e o segundo, após 24 meses. Adicionalmente, um Platyrrhinus lineatus foi capturado a cerca de 20 km, após 26 meses. Ao se locomoverem por razoáveis distâncias, como não são monogâmicos, os machos cruzam com fêmeas de outros fragmentos, trocando genes e reduzindo - ou mesmo evitando - a endogamia. Assim, há a possibilidade de se incrementar a diversidade genética nas metapopulações, possibilitada pelos deslocamentos entre os fragmentos. As espécies que assim se comportam não são vulneráveis ao isolamento.

Introducción. La intromisión humana en ecosistemas silvestres ha provocado cambios de comportamiento en los murciélagos, con la consecuente invasión a viviendas, convirtiéndolos en un factor de riesgo para la transmisión de la rabia a humanos y mascotas. Objetivos. Determinar en el departamento del Valle del Cauca, las asociaciones entre hábitos de comportamiento y transmisión de rabia entre murciélagos y su significado epidemiológico con énfasis en riesgo para la población humana. Materiales y métodos. Durante el periodo de diciembre 1999 a junio 2008, fueron capturados 1.321 murciélagos por el programa de vigilancia de rabia en el departamento del Valle del Cauca. El diagnóstico de rabia se hizo por inmunofluorescencia directa e inoculación en ratones, utilizando tejido encefálico de los murciélagos capturados. La tipificación viral se hizo por inmunofluorescencia indirecta usando anticuerpos monoclonales. Resultados. Se detectaron dos ejemplares de Eptesicus brasiliensis positivos para rabia en los años 2000 y 2002, y dos casos más en especímenes de E. brasiliensis y Molossus molossus, en el 2008. No se detectó el virus de la rabia en E. brasiliensis ni en M. molossus, ni en ninguna otra especie durante los años 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 y 2007. Se encontraron distintas especies de murciélagos, como E. brasiliensis, M. molossus, Myotis nigricans, Glossophaga soricina, Noctiliio albiventris y Carollia perspicillata, compartiendo refugios en casas. Se detectaron virus rábicos de las variantes antigénicas 3 y 4, en murciélagos M. molossus y E. brasiliensis. Conclusiones. La presencia en el Departamento del Valle del Cauca de las variantes antigénicas 3 y 4 del virus rábico en murciélagos no hematófagos de hábitos caseros, probablemente, ha sido facilitada por la deforestación de los hábitats naturales de estas especies; además, el estilo de arquitectura urbana provee un hábitat artificial que posibilita el contacto físico entre las especies y la transmisión de rabia entre ellas. Ante las dificultades para controlar la rabia en murciélagos y la falta de herramientas adecuadas, la vigilancia continua de la enfermedad en los murciélagos, basada en el diagnóstico y la tipificación de los virus rábicos por laboratorio, en de los asentamientos humanos y alrededor de ellos, la vacunación preventiva en animales domésticos y de producción, así como la educación de la comunidad (para la concientización del riesgo y la recolección pasiva de muestras para su análisis), se convierten en las mejores herramientas para prevenir la transmisión a humanos.


Introduction: Human activities in the wild have recently increased the changes in bat behavior and invasion of houses, turning these animals into a health threat for humans and pets. Objectives: To determine the associations between behavioral habits and rabies transmission among bats in the department of Valle del Cauca and to assess the risk the existence of rabies in house dwelling bats presents for human health. Material and methods: In the period from December 1999 to June 2008, 1,321 hematophagous and non-hematophagous bats were captured for rabies epidemiological surveillance in the department of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Rabies was diagnosed by direct immunofluorescence test on the brain tissue of collected animals. Viral typification was achieved by indirect immunofluorecense using rabies specific monoclonal antibodies. Results: Four bats were positive for rabies: two Eptesicus brasiliensis in 2000 and 2002, and an Eptesicus brasiliensis and a Molossus molossus in 2008. During the years 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 no rabies virus was found in E. brasiliensis and M. molossus or in any other bat species. Various species including E. brasiliensis, M. molossus, Myotis nigricans, Glossophaga soricina, Noctiliio albiventris and Carollia perspicillata were found sharing shelters in houses. Rabies virus antigenic variants 3 and 4 were found in M. molossus and E. brasiliensis bats only. Conclusions: The presence and potential spread of rabies antigenic variants 3 and 4 to cities have very likely been facilitated by the perturbation of the natural habitats of non-hematophagous bats in the department of Valle del Cauca; the urban architecture style also provides an artificial habitat which allows for physical contact and rabies transmission among the species. Seeing the difficulty for controlling rabies in bats and the lack of adequate tools, intensive laboratory based rabies surveillance in and around human settlements, preventive vaccination for house and production animals, and education for the community (in relation to increasing the awareness concerning the risk, and passive recollection of samples for analysis) represent major preventive strategies against bat rabies transmission to humans and pets.

ABSTRACT

Isolamento do vírus rábico em morcegos (Molossus molossus) em área urbana, no município de Recife, Pernambuco, Brasil. Quatro exemplares foram encontrados durante o dia em locais visíveis e não habituais caídos no chão ainda com vida, não havendo contato com pessoas ou animais. Destes apenas dois foram identificados; porém, não foi possível fazer a identificação em dois espécimes, pois os mesmos foram incinerados antes da identificação. O diagnóstico foi positivo para as provas de imunofluorescência direta e inoculação intracerebral em camundongos. O presente estudo apresenta o isolamento de vírus rábico pela primeira vez no Estado de Pernambuco em morcegos insetívoros.


Rabies virus was detected in bats (Molossus molossus) from an urban area in the City of Recife, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Four individuals were found during the day in visible, non-habitual places, lying on the ground, but still alive. No contact occurred with people or animals. Of these, only two were identified; it was not possible to identify two specimens, since they were incinerated prior to identification. Diagnosis was positive by direct immunofluorescence and intracerebral inoculation in mice. This study presents the first instance in which the virus was detected in insectivorous bats in the State of Pernambuco.

Durante estudos com morcegos em floresta de várzea na APA do Rio Curiaú, Amapá, Brasil, observamos três casos de predações oportunistas de morcegos frugívoros capturados em redes de neblina. Duas destas predações ocorreram por marsupiais e uma por anuro. Artibeus planirostris (Spix, 1823) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) foi predado por Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758 e Philander opossum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae). Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) foi predado por Leptodactylus pentadactylus (Laurenti, 1768) (Anura, Leptodactylidae). A vocalização dos morcegos provavelmente atraiu os marsupiais para a rede, onde estes os predaram aproveitando que estavam presos. Este tipo de interação pode ocorrer naturalmente, no entanto, com maior dificuldade de registro.


We observed three occasional predations of bats captured in mist nets by marsupials and a frog during studies in a várzea forest in the Amapá state. Artibeus planirostris (Spix, 1823) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) was preyed upon by Didelphis marsupialis Linnaeus, 1758 and Philander opossum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Didelphimorphia, Didelphidae). Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Chiroptera, Phyllostomidae) was preyed on by Leptodactylus pentadactylus (Laurenti, 1768) (Anura, Leptodactylidae). The bats vocalizations probably attracted the marsupials and a frog to the mist nets where they preyed. This interaction form can occur naturally, however, are more difficult to observed.

We studied the bat fauna of the Pantanal floodplain and its surrounding plateaus in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, based on the scientific collection at Universidade Anhanguera - Uniderp and on the Projeto Morcegos do Pantanal data bank at UFMS, comprising 9,037 captures of 56 species recorded from 1994 to 2007. The Pantanal surveys were carried out in the Nhecolândia, Aquidauana, Miranda, and Paraguai sub-regions; the uplands surveys took place in the Maracaju, Bodoquena, and Urucum formations. Bat specimens were mist-netted over 376 nights in 35 sites, predominantly near fruiting trees, bat shelters, and forest patches. In the floodplain 46 species were recorded (n = 6,292 individuals), and 44 species were found in the uplands (n = 2,745 individuals). Six families were recorded: Phyllostomidae (30 species), Molossidae (12 species), Verpertilionidae (nine species) Noctilionidae (two species), Emballorunidae (two species) and Mormoopidae (one species). The bat fauna was predominantly composed of insectivore (32) and frugivore (15) species. The frugivorous Artibeus planirostris (n = 3,101 individuals) was the commonest species in floodplain and uplands. Other common species were Myotis nigricans (n = 762), Molossus molossus (n = 692), Noctilio albiventris (n = 681), Platyrrhinus lineatus (n = 633), Sturnira lilium (n = 461), Carollia perspicillata (n = 451), Glossophaga soricina (n = 436), Artibeus lituratus (n = 320), and Desmodus rotundus (n = 281). In the floodplain there were three insectivores among the most common species, contrasting with the uplands dominated by the frugivores. The diversity for the 35 sites assembled (H' = 2.5) is comparable to that recorded for tropical forests. The bat fauna presented here represents 34% of the Brazilian bat species, and 62% of species reported for the Upper Paraguay River Basin. Additionally, five species are reported for the first time in Mato Grosso do Sul.


Estudamos a fauna de morcegos na planície do Pantanal e nos planaltos de entorno no Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil, com base na coleção científica da Universidade Anhanguera - Uniderp e no banco de dados do Projeto Morcegos do Pantanal, UFMS, incluindo 9.037 capturas de 56 espécies, entre 1994 e 2007. Amostragens no Pantanal foram feitas nas sub-regiões da Nhecolândia, Aquidauana, Miranda e Paraguai; no planalto as amostragens foram realizadas nas formações de Maracaju, Bodoquena e Urucum. Espécies de morcegos foram registradas ao longo de 376 noites em 35 sítios, predominantemente com o uso de redes de neblina próximas a árvores frutíferas, abrigos e florestas. Na planície, foram registradas 46 espécies (n = 6.292 indivíduos) e no planalto 44 espécies (n = 2.745 indivíduos). Seis famílias foram encontradas: Phyllostomidae (30 espécies), Molossidae (12 espécies), Verpertilionidae (nove espécies), Noctilionidae (duas espécies), Emballorunidae (duas espécies) e Mormoopidae (uma espécie). ABSTRACT

Pathogenic profile of a rabies virus isolated from an insectivorous bat Lasiurus ega was compared with a rabies fixedvirus strain (CVS/32) in hamster and mouse. Incubation and clinical periods, clinical manifestation and death rateswere compared. Challenge of hamsters with L. ega was performed using: 10 2,611-4,021 LD50 /0,05 mL;. For CVS were used10 3,7-4,7 LD50 /0,05 mL. Were tested intramuscular (IM), intradermal (ID), intranasal (IN), epidermal abrasion (EA)inoculation routes. Viral antigen in brains was confirmed by Direct Immunofluorescence Test. Mortality percentagesobserved with L. ega rabies virus isolate were the following in hamster: 3,5 % IM, 10,710% IN; in mice: 50.0% IM, 30.0%IN. Furious rabies was predominant. Mortality percentages observed with CVS/32 in hamster: 12.5% IM, 62.5% ID,12.5% IN; in mice 100.0% IM, 70.0% ID, 10.0% IN. Paralytic rabies was found with this strain in both animal models.Epidermic abrasion was not a suitable challenge route. Incubation period was 5-7 days for CVS and 11-16 days for L. egaisolate, meanwhile clinical periods were comprehended between 4–7 days for both viruses. Several substitutions weredetected at antigenic domains of glycoprotein: AI (position 231), AII (34–42 and 198-200), domain of fusion dependenton low pH (102–179), transmembrane domain (440–461) and residue 242. These viruses showed contrasting biologicalbehaviors that can be linked to those substitutions at antigenic domains previously described.


O perfil patogênico de um vírus da raiva isolado de um morcego insetívoro Lasiurus ega foi comparado com o de vírusfixo de raiva (CVS/32) em hamster e camundongo, determinando os períodos de incubação e clínico, manifestaçãoclínica e mortalidade. Os animais foram desafiados com 10 2,611 - 4,021 DL50 /0,05 mL do isolado de L. ega e 10 3,7- 4,7 LD50 /0,05 mL do CVS/32, usando as vias: intramuscular (IM), intradermica (ID), intranasal (IN) e abrasão epidermica (AE).A presença do antígeno viral foi confirmada pela prova de imunofluorescência direta. As porcentagens de mortalidadeobservadas com o isolado de L. ega foram as seguintes em hamster: 3,5% IM, 10,71% IN; em camundongo: 50.0%IM, 30.0% IN. A forma furiosa da doença foi predominante. As porcentagens de mortalidade observadas com o vírusCVS/32 em hamster foram as seguintes: 12.5% IM, 62.5% ID, 12.5% IN; em camundongo 100.0% IM, 70.0% ID,10.0% IN. Com este vírus foi observada raiva paralitica. A via AE mostrou-se inadequada para induzir doença. Operíodo de incubação foi de 5–7 dias para o CVS/32 e 11-16 dias para o isolado de L. ega, entre tanto os períodosclínicos oscilaram entre 4–7 dias para ambos os vírus. Varias substituições foram achadas em domínios antigênicos daglicoproteína: AI (posição 231), AII (34–42 e 198-200), domínio de fusão dependente de baixo pH (102–179), domínioda transmembrana (440–461) e resíduo 242. Esses vírus mostraram comportamentos biológicos distintos o que poderiaestar ligado às substituições nos domínios antigênicos anteriormente descritos.

Generally, natural environments have been transformed into small forest remnants, with the consequent habitat loss and species extinction. The North Paraná State is not an exception, since only 2 to 4% of the original ecosystem occurs in small fragments of Stational Semidecidual Forest. We studied the species richness and abundance of bats in two forest fragments from the Fazenda Congonhas, in Rancho Alegre city, Paraná State, Brazil. Four samplings were undertaken in a legally protected native area (107.8ha) and in a reforested area (11.8ha) between April 2007 and March 2008. Samplings began at nightfall and lasted six hours, during two consecutive nights in each location. The individuals were captured using eight mist nets, with the same capture effort in both environments. A total of 397 individuals, 14 species and 10 genera were captured in the native area; while in the reforested area, 105 individuals, six species and four genera. Artibeus lituratus was the most common species in both fragments (n=328, 65.3%), followed by Artibeus fimbriatus (n=44, 8.8%) and Artibeus jamaicensis (n=30, 6.0%). Other species including Platyrrhinus lineatus, Carollia perspicillata, Sturnira lilium, Chrotopterus auritus, Desmodus rotundus, Michronycteris megalotis, Phyllostomus hastatus, Phyllostomus discolor, Myoti levis, Myotis nigricans and Lasiurus blossevillii, accounted for 19.9% of the captures. The native area presented higher values of species richness (S=14) and diversity (H’=1.4802) in comparison to the reforested area (S=6, H’=0.57015). The t-test evidenced a significant difference between diversity among the sites (t=7.1075). Chao 1 index indicated that the sampling effort recorded approximately 78% from the total species richness for the native area and 75% for the reforested area. Therefore, the preservation of the forest fragment is essential since it provides habitat for a diverse community of bats. Forest management and reforestation actions may prevent drastic changes in the microclimate of neighboring areas within the forest fragment, and could allow the occupation of available niches in the area, by opportunistic and generalist species. Por lo general, los entornos naturales se han transformado en pequeños remanentes de bosque, con la consecuente pérdida de hábitat y la extinción de especies. El Norte del Estado de Paraná no es una excepción, ya que sólo 2 a 4% del ecosistema original se presenta en pequeños fragmentos de bosque estacional semideciduo. En este estudio observamos la riqueza de especies y abundancia de murciélagos en dos fragmentos de bosque de Fazenda Congonhas, en Rancho Alegre, de Paraná, Brasil. Se realizaron cuatro muestreos en cada área, una nativa legalmente protegida (107.8ha) y una reforestada (11.8ha) entre abril 2007 y marzo 2008. Al caer la noche en cada sitio se colocaron ocho redes de niebla por seis horas durante dos noches consecutivas. Se capturaron 397 individuos, 14 especies y 10 géneros en la zona nativa y 105 individuos, seis especies y cuatro géneros en la reforestada. Artibeus lituratus fue la especie más común en ambos fragmentos (n=328, 65.3%), seguido por Artibeus fimbriatus (n=44, 8.8%) y Artibeus jamaicensis (n=30, 6.0%). Otras especies incluyendo Platyrrhinus lineatus, Carollia perspicillata, Sturnira lilium, Chrotopterus auritus, Desmodus rotundus, Michronycteris megalotis, Phyllostomus hastatus, Phyllostomus discolor, Myoti levis, Myotis nigricans and Lasiurus blossevillii, constituyeron el 19.9% de las capturas. El área nativa presentó mayores valores de riqueza de especies (S=14) y diversidad (H’=1.4802) en comparación con la reforestada (S=6, H’=0.57015). El t-test evidenció una diferencia significativa en la diversidad de los sitios (t=7.1075). El índice Chao 1 indicó que el esfuerzo de muestreo registró el 78% de la riqueza total de especies en la zona nativa y 75% en la reforestada. Por lo tanto, la preservación del fragmento de bosque es esencial, ya que proporciona un hábitat para una diversa comunidad de murciélagos. Las acciones de manejo forestal y la reforestación pueden evitar cambios drásticos en el microclima de las áreas vecinas al fragmento de bosque y podría permitir la ocupación de nichos disponibles en la zona, por especies generalistas y oportunistas.

ABSTRACT

Neste estudo apresentamos uma lista de morcegos registrados em um fragmento florestal urbano do Campus da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, Nordeste do Brasil. De julho de 2005 a setembro de 2007 coletamos um total de 400 indivíduos, distribuídos em cinco famílias, 13 gêneros e 18 espécies. Phyllostomidae foi a família com a maior riqueza de espécies. Carollia perspicillata, Artibeus lituratus e Platyrrhinus lineatus foram as mais abundantes, compreendendo mais de 65 por cento dos indivíduos capturados. Este trabalho apresenta a primeira ocorrência de oito espécies par o Estado de Sergipe, incluindo uma para a Mata Atlântica. Observações sobre aspectos reprodutivos das espécies mais abundantes são incluídas.


In this study we present a list of bats recorded in an urban forest fragment at the campus of the Federal University of Sergipe, Northeastern Brazil. From July 2005 to September 2007 we collected a total of 400 individuals, distributed in five families, 13 genera and 18 species. Phyllostomidae was the most speciose family. Carollia perspicillata, Artibeus lituratus and Platyrrhinus lineatus were the most abundant species, comprising more than 65 percent of captured individuals. This work presents the first occurrence for eight species in Sergipe state, including one in Atlantic forest. Comments on reproductive aspects of more abundant species are included.

ABSTRACT

During 45 days without electrical power, 57 individuals (8.7 percent of the population) from the village of Antônio Dino (municipality of Turiaçu, Northeastern Brazil) were attacked by bats and 16 died from human rabies. The aim of the study was to analyze the factors associated with bat attacks and the development of human rabies. Of the 46 individuals, who suffered bat attacks, 36 (78.3 percent) were under 17 years of age. The risk factors associated with bat attacks were age under 17 years, having observed bats inside the bedroom and having been without electrical power in the house. Age under 17 years and having been without electrical power in the house were factors associated with human rabies.


Durante 45 dias sem energia elétrica, 57 indivíduos (8,3 por cento da população) da localidade Antônio Dino, município de Turiaçu, MA, foram atacados por morcegos e 16 morreram de raiva humana. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os fatores associados aos ataques por morcegos e ao desenvolvimento de raiva humana. Dos 46 indivíduos que sofreram ataque por morcegos, 36 (78,3 por cento) tinham menos de 17 anos de idade. Os fatores de risco associados a ataques por morcegos foram idade inferior a 17 anos, ter observado morcego dentro do quarto e haver ficado sem energia elétrica no domicílio. Idade inferior a 17 anos e ter ficado sem energia elétrica no domicílio foram fatores associados à raiva humana.
